On Saturday 2nd of March we debuted at our first ever visit to the Sunderland Great North Big Band Jazz Festival now in its 10th year.<\/p>\n

This popular three day event attracts big bands from across the whole country with a concert on Friday night followed by an open section on Saturday afternoon and school and youth band sections on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Resplendent in our new Wylam Brewery<\/a> sponsored band polo shirts and smart new music folders we hit the audience and judges with an exciting set.<\/p>\n

Corner Pocket<\/a>, Lonely Street<\/a>, Mac the Knife<\/a> and Feelin’ the Funk<\/a>.
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

The judges Paul Jones and Pete Long, both top world reputed saxophonists, were blown away by the sheer size and tight big sound of the band and gave us some very encouraging feedback.\u00a0Pete Long described us as an “Incredible \u00a0magnificent concatenation of humanity” of “All shapes and sizes” Fair comment!<\/p>\n

We were very proud to be invited back on stage as one of the top three bands to play with Paul Jones and Pete Long as guest soloists.<\/p>\n

This was the pinnacle of our short history together as a band and a tribute to the directorship of our MD Dave Hignett and the dedication of all our band members.<\/p>\n

As one of the three prize winners we\u00a0also received a \u00a3200 cheque toward band funds.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately some of the band had to leave before the prized guest slot performance but we managed to find some willing players to fill the spare seats. \u00a0Many thanks to all those concerned.<\/p>\n

Musicians everywhere, this really was a\u00a0big\u00a0<\/i>band! Drawn from the\u00a0Tyne\u00a0Valley\u00a0community, this outfit were out to enjoy themselves. Basie\u2019s\u00a0Corner Pocket<\/i>, Sammy Nestico\u2019s\u00a0Lonely Street<\/i>, Eric Morales\u2019\u00a0Feelin\u2019 the Funk<\/i>\u00a0–\u00a0 good tunes all. To top it off vocalist\u00a0Barbara<\/b>\u00a0Hignett<\/b>\u00a0unleashed a killer version of\u00a0Mack the Knife<\/i>. Was this\u00a0Live at the Sands<\/i>,\u00a0Las Vegas\u00a0or the Students\u2019 Union,\u00a0Sunderland\u00a0University? No matter where, great stuff!
